Kenyan shooter Priscilla Mburu will for the next 10 days fight for a place in next year’s Paris 2024 Olympic Games as she takes part in the African Qualification event set to take place in Cairo, Egypt.
To seal her qualification in next year’s summer games, the Kenyan, who is determined to make history as the first Kenyan female shooter to grace the Olympic stage, will have to finish inside the top two bracket.
“I aim to follow in the footsteps of Shujaa, our Men's Rugby 7s team, who have already earned their spot at the Paris Games,” Mburu told NOC-K media on Sunday.
In her first attempt, Mburu will be competing in the Olympic 10m Air Rifle event.
Mburu was in 2022, thanks to the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K), awarded an Olympic Solidarity scholarship to complement her own efforts and the support provided by her national federation, the Kenya Sports Shooting Federation.
She is among eight athletes in individual sports on this scholarship, who were selected for their high potential to qualify for Paris 2024.
Furthermore, Mburu is also a beneficiary of the partnership between NOC-K and the City of Miramas in France, where the Kenya national team has been preparing for the Olympics and qualifiers.
Recently returning from a two-week training camp in Miramas, she spoke highly of the facilities, environment, and coaching offered by the city.
She expressed confidence in her progress stating: "I've made substantial improvements in my shooting technique, which I believe will give me a competitive edge for the gold or silver medal at the qualifier event in Cairo.
“The immersive training experience in Marignane, South of France, has been invaluable for refining my technique and preparing for the demanding challenges of Olympic-level competition. My shots now consistently reach 103 points per series, which significantly enhances my prospects of qualifying for Paris 2024."
